Caring for people with mental illness requires specialized knowledge about the medications they take, a compassionate approach, and an understanding and delivery of the types of services these individuals need and deserve. With these considerations in mind, the Foundation has created the Mental Health Pharmacy™ Directory. The directory is a tool to connect individuals living with mental illness and members of their support system with pharmacies and pharmacists who provide the specialized services needed along with compassionate and knowledgeable care.
The Defining the Future Research Grant program has created a competitive selection process that challenges students, residents, and fellows to research innovative and cutting-edge practices that will impact the care of patients into the future. Qualified applicants must focus their research on one of the interests of the Foundation which include: 1) stigma associated with psychiatric disorders, and 2) Comprehensive Medication Management as a best practice. Research is showcased at the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) Annual Meeting.
Individuals living with mental health conditions should be able to utilize their pharmacist to understand their medications so they can be taken correctly to get the most benefit and avoid unwanted side effects. The Foundation has created a guide that outlines what patients and their families should expect during their interactions with their pharmacist. These expectations include being treated with respect, having a private setting for discussions, explaining the reasons for taking medications as prescribed, ongoing re-evaluation of medication needs, and more.
